Thoughts on Making Friends

When I was a kid, I always felt like I had to have a “best friend”. In my little kid brain, that meant somebody who listened to all my secrets (without judging or telling me that the boy I had a crush on really wasn’t all that cute), who would trust me with their own confidences, who would come over to my house and play, who would cover for me if I tried to do something at their house that I knew wasn’t allowed at mine, etc.

Now that I’m older, that definition has changed somewhat. Yes, it’s still important for me that a friend will keep my confidences and all of that, but there’s so much more to friendship now, it seems.

I have always been someone who struggled to make friends. Sure, I’ve had acquaintances here and there, but the number of people I have met in my life who (whom?) I count as real friends is pretty small.

Now I am living in a town that is far away from any friends I have had, and I am neither working nor attending school at the moment. I’d like to be doing both of those things, of course, but given some other life circumstances at the moment, there’s not a lot of options for them at the moment.

Since I don’t know anyone in this town, and really don’t get out much, my question is, how do I make friends? How do I meet other women and build friendships with them? Is it even possible?

This is part of the reason that I started blogging. I wanted to find a way to start to get to know others, to build relationships with people who are in the same walk of life, or who have experienced some of the same struggles and difficulties I have. I know it’s not quite the same as being able to just call someone up to go to a happy hour on a random Tuesday, but it’s still something, I think.

My biggest problem, I think, is feeling like I really don’t have anything all that interesting or important to say. I tend to be pretty shy with new people, plus I’m not sure I want to get too personal on a blog, so I end up feeling like the stuff I write doesn’t mean anything to anyone. I blog things that are running around in my head, but I can’t write all of it, because so much of what I think/worry about involves other people, and I’m not about to be putting their business on my blog. I do keep a notebook with ideas and inspiration topics in it, too, and then I always end up feeling like my thoughts on that particular topic are completely lame, and I end up not even publishing the post because it’s almost embarrassing! Maybe I’m just too hard on myself….??

Either way, my hope is that eventually, I will have some new relationships with other bloggers, and will gain some new friendships through this little blogging adventure. And maybe if I’m lucky, one day I’ll be able to meet some of the people whose blogs I love, and who have inspired me to keep going, even when I feel completely boring and irrelevant.

Never, ever, ever, nope not ever.

…will I not think that Mountain Dew Kick Starts are basically the best thing since sliced bread.

…will I be convinced that Obamacare was/is in any way a good idea.

…will I want to own a station wagon or minivan.

…will I be able to smell the spine of a book – the paper, the glue, the ink – and not getting a little thrill of delight at the smell and the wonder of what the book’s pages hold.

…will I get tired of watching Pitch Perfect.

...will I become a professional actor or singer, much to my everlasting disappointment.

…will I not absolutely love spending time with my dad.

…will I think that taking a walk is a bad idea.

…do I think I will I be able to keep up with Twitter. Seriously, it’s like a damn tornado every time I look at it. #holycowthingskeephappeningandihavenoideawhatisgoingon

...will I not have a somewhat embarrassing love for Lil’ Mama’s completely ridiculous awesome music.

4th of July and Weekend Recap

weekend shenanigans

I had THE BEST 4th of July I’ve had in such a long time this year! I went with Boyfriend to one of his brother’s houses in Nebraska. K lives on a lake and has a boat, and as soon as Boyfriend told me that, I was pretty much completely sold on the idea. (Not that I wouldn’t have wanted to go just to visit with his family, as well, but the lake/boat thing definitely helped! J)

We left for Nebraska on Wednesday. Because we had a six and a half hour drive ahead of us, I had gotten a book on tape from the library (Harvest, by Tess Gerritsen. I highly recommend it!), and had made a CD full of 80’s songs, since that’s Boyfriend’s favorite genre. We had a blast rocking out to some 80’s jams, and discussing the book, trying to figure out the plot twists.

When we got to K’s house, we immediately got all the kids together and headed out on the boat for a while. I was a little nervous about swimming, since I am such a freak about water where I can’t see what’s around me, but I got over that pretty quickly in favor of floating around in the cool water.

When we got back to the house, another one of Boyfriend’s brothers, T, had arrived with his family, so K immediately started in on grilling steaks and potatoes for dinner. Delicious! The rest of us enjoyed some drinks on the deck while K was cooking. I had a pretty embarrassing moment when I managed to knock an entire glass of Bloody Mary all over Boyfriend’s mom and her white shorts….whoops. I had met her for the first time that day, as well, which made the whole thing worse since I was trying so hard to make a good impression. Thankfully, she was pretty cool about it though, so I got over it pretty quickly.

On Thursday, we were of course out on the boat again! K had borrowed a pontoon from a friend as well, so we could get our whole group of 17 people out at the same time. We tied the boats together and got down to the business of enjoying the day! I, in typical Jordan fashion, managed to fall pretty spectacularly while trying to step from one boat to the other, and now I have a beautiful red, white, and blue bruise on the inside of my thigh. How very patriotic of me. :-/

We didn’t end up going out on the water to watch the fireworks that night, since there really wasn’t enough space for all of us to go out there safely (and legally), but we were lucky enough to be able to spend the evening in the lakeside backyard of one of K’s wife’s friends, so we still got an amazing show. There were a lot of private fireworks happening at the same time, so we actually got to see fireworks from every direction! Fireworks are basically one of my most favorite things, too, so I was ridiculously happy with the show.

I tried tubing for the first time in my life on Friday. All of Boyfriend’s nephews that were there went before me, and did it beautifully – no falls, no flips, nothing. Then I came along…..and fell off twice. Yep. Even the little six year old did it better than I did! (#Embarrassing.) I got a few new bruises from hitting the tube and the water, but thankfully, (apart from my wounded pride) those were the worst of my injuries.

We came back from Nebraska on Saturday, and spent the evening laying low and recovering from our vacation. Side note: does anyone else ever need to spend a day or two recovering/relaxing after a vacation that was supposed to be relaxing on its own?? We were both totally drained from all the sun and fun we had experienced, so it was an early night for us.

On Sunday, my dad emailed me and asked if I was around so he could fly up here and say hi, so we headed out to the airport to meet him. We ended up going flying with him for a while, which was awesome. I always love flying with my dad.

It's Sunday - Let's Get Social!

I am linking up with Neely at A Complete Waste of Makeup today for Sunday Social!
Sunday Social

What is the best trip you’ve ever been on?
-          I went on a two month missions trip to the Philippines the summer after my sophomore years in high school, and that wins best trip, hands down. There were difficulties (huge insects, a general lack of decent plumbing, humidity), but the experience was incredible, and something that was absolutely worth every single hardship.

What is your best idea for a girl’s trip?
-          I think a beach trip would be awesome! Sand, sun, and drinks…how could you go wrong?!

What is your best idea for a couple’s trip?
-          A trip that combines a beach with awesome, surfable waves with a vineyard or winery! That way, we can enjoy the fun of a beach trip during the day, and then indulge in some delicious wine in the evening. Boyfriend and I both really enjoy water activities, and win, so a trip like this would be an absolute win-win for us!

What is the best vacation on the cheap?
-          Well this will always vary based on where and when you’re going. I would always suggest going somewhere during the off-season, though, to save on airfare and lodging. You may also be able to find some awesome trip deals on sites like Groupon or Living Social.

What is the place you most want to visit?
-          I want to tour Europe!! I want to see all the major places – London, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome. I want to lay on a white sand beach in Greece, and tour the countryside of Eastern Europe. I want to put a lock on one of the bridges in Paris. Mostly I just want to be everywhere in Europe!!!

Tune in next week, when I answer these questions:

1. What is your all-time favorite song?
2. Who is your favorite singer/band?
3. What song reminds you of your childhood?
4. What songs put you in a good mood?
5. What is your music to rock out to in your car?
6. What is the most embarrassing album or song you own?

I Will Never, Ever, Ever......... {Link-up}

...will I say “sure, you’re right” when I know that actually, I’m the one who is right.

…have I not had a bit of an unhealthy obsession with notebooks and planners.

…will I be not vain enough to drive a beater car and not be slightly embarrassed by it.

…do I wake up in the morning and want to immediately hop out of bed and start the day.

…will I stop wanting to swing through the shoe department, just to see what they’ve got, even though I am
absolutely the WORST high-heel wearer ever.

...do I think I’ll actually be able to master the art of surfing (but that doesn’t mean I’ll ever give it up!).

…will I have time to do all the reading and writing I want to do.

…will I take for granted times when I am not in pain.

…will I stop loving LuluLemon clothing.

...be upset if Boyfriend wants to take me out to dinner

...say "No, I don't really want to have wine in the house this week."

...be a runner.

...turn down an opportunity to see a really good play/musical or go to a really good concert.

...say that inconsiderate or rude behavior is okay, even if I understand the reasoning behind it.
